The envisaged investment project is the construction of 3 small hydro power plants in the North West remote region of Uganda and the rehabilitation of 1 plant in the South West. These sites should be off-grid, but could also be connected to the grid later, depending on the result of the studies. They will contribute to the improvement of the isolated power grid system in the North West of Uganda (called West Nile grid system) and enhance access to electricity for the population.
Pre-feasibility studies have been realized but feasibility studies need to be performed to confirm the potential of generation, the design of the mini hydro power plants, the technical, economic and financial analysis. Besides, environmental and social impact assessments also need to be realized.
The EU-AITF technical assistance grant will be used to finance the feasibility studies and ESIA of 3 potential mini hydro power plant in the remote area of West Nile in Uganda and of the rehabilitation of a fourth mini hydro site in South Uganda.
