The Kazungula Bridge and Border Project (KBBP) entails the implementation of new infrastructure to replace the existing ferry and border facilities between Zambia and Botswana at Kazungula. The project comprises the construction of road/rail bridge with a span of 923 meters over the river Zambezi; border facilities in each country and approximately 10 km of bridge approach and access roads. To ensure a complete and efficient cross-border infrastructure system, the additional project components include: (i) implementation of Trade Facilitation instruments and border-related procedures and policies; (ii) Technical Assistance support; (iii) complementary cross-cutting components.The contract for the bridge civil works commenced in December 2014, while the procurement for the civil works for the border facilities has been completed. The OSBP works in Botswana (Package 2) commenced April 2016 and that for the Zambia side (Package 3), that required to be relaunched commenced June 2017. The OSBP works are expected to be completed in September 2018 and December 2019 for Botswana and Zambia respectively.
This phase 2 Grant (administered by the Government of Botswana) is to be used for expert support to the Project Management Team (PMT). Any gaps that may be noted in the post-construction operation and trade facilitation arising from activities covered under TA 1 shall also be covered under this tranche.
